Firewood Mission

Who we are: The Firewood Mission is a God-driven team of guys (and sometimes gals) who ‘process’ trees into firewood from Spring to Autumn and then deliver to needy families all over Christchurch and beyond during the winter. We come under the umbrella of the HOPE Presbyterian Church in Hornby, but we work closely with several community organisations including the Pegasus Community, the Salvation Army, WINZ, and various other churches and social services.

What we do: Since 2001 the Firewood Mission has grown from a one-man-band with one chain saw and an axe – to a small team of dedicated folk who use two 32-ton petrol-powered log splitters, a small fleet of Husqvarna chain saws and custom-built trailers. We have our own depot in a pit just outside of Christchurch thanks to the kindness of the Selwyn District Council. We deliver about 300 cubic meters of firewood to around 100 families every year. These are families where there’s no possibility they can afford to buy the firewood themselves.

Our Philosophy. In a condensed version, it is one of genuine care. We want to serve and care for each other and for those in our community who are finding life really difficult and desperately need a break.
