Quarterly Breakfast

Encouraging young people in our lives

The Men had some challenges shared recently with them while they enjoyed an amazing cooked breakfast end of August 2024.

Carey Ewing from Te Whare Awhero (Hope House) shared about a question he had pondered - how much is up to us, and how much is because of the circumstances we were born into? Then: How can we help others who don’t have our privilege?

Te Whare Awhero (Hope House) https://tewhareawhero.org/ helps young people in a variety of ways giving children access to opportunities they wouldn’t otherwise have.

A survey of 319 youth in Hornby revealed:

- there is a lot of pain out there and it’s impacting anxiety and mental health

- the young people said connection was important - listening first, not being talked to

- we can accept people without accepting their behaviour

- create spaces where they are welcome

As men who are all friends, Fathers, Uncles, Grandfathers … we can spend time with young people. Do something with two hands - so phone put away. Spending time is where value can be created.

Find an excuse to spend time with young people eg take a pie trip across the South Island, or have a night away and tell them what they are good at, or just spend an afternoon together. Encourage them.

Jesus said in Mark 10:13 - “let the little children come to me for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these….”

We should do the same.

Men of Purpose - videos of the sessions held in March 2024

We had an intensive month of study once a week in March as we considered the life of Samuel from the Old Testament and gather together to learn more. We covered the following topics:

Part 1: Becoming Men of purpose: The call

Part 2: Hearing from God: Listening well

Part 3: When things go wrong: Second chances

Part 4: Staying the course with obedience

Videos of most of these sessions are below.

Part 1: Becoming Men of Purpose. In this session we talk about Samuel and his origins and introduce the questions that were considered in two themes.

Part 2: In this video we hear the teaching content on Samuel and Listening to God by Steve Talbot, which was delivered before the small groups started discussing the questions mentioned in the video.

Part 3: In this video we hear the teaching content on Samuel and Second Chances, which was delivered before the small groups started discussing the questions mentioned in the video.
